Board

Board members at NAC are elected at the annual meeting for a period of two years. The board is responsible for the members at NAC, and is responsible for developing the strategic direction and organizational guidelines, based on the organisation’s values and principles. They ensure that NAC follows its own principles and values, is responsible for health, environment and safety, exercises financial control and implements effective measures against corruption. The secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day running of our office in Oslo. The Secretary General reports to the board.

Chair

Gry Synnevåg

Gry is educated at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) where she currently is employed at the Department of International Environment and Development Studies. She has a particular responsibility for food security and agricultural development in conflict-prone and vulnerable states with focus on Mali, Niger, and Afghanistan.

She has extensive experience from work in research and higher education as well as long work experience from both international and national NGOs, including as Country Director at the Norwegian Church Aid in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2008. She was Chair of the Program Committee at NAC from 2014 to 2019 and is a former board member.

Deputy Chair

Farid Ghiami

Farid is originally from Afghanistan but has lived in Norway since 2002. He has studied Social Sciences with personnel management at the University of Stavanger (UiS), Executive Master of Management at BI School of Economics and has further education in adult pedagogy from UiS. Farid has previously worked as a reception manager at the Stavanger reception center, in various positions for Smi Human, and as Department Manager in Sandnes municipality. Today, he works as Department Manager for NAV Working Life Center Vest-Viken.

Sverre Hjelleset

Sverre is educated in economics and physics from the University of Oslo, the Norwegian Business School BI and the Norwegian School of Economics. Sverre has worked in Afghanistan through NAC and the Norwegian Church Aid. Currently, Sverre is partially retired and works with the Eco-Lighthouse (ELH) certification scheme. He has previously been Chair of the board at NAC.

Trude Thommesen

Trude is a midwife and clinical supervisor at Stavanger University Hospital, with education from the University of Bergen and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. She has worked in Bangladesh, Palestine, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan and is additionally a board member at the Norwegian Association of Midwives and the International Confederation of Midwives.

Samina Ansari

Samina is educated at the University of Oslo, Maastricht, and Sciences Po Paris. She has ten years of experience in sustainability work and has worked for several international organizations and companies. Today she works for Equality Check and manages the company Ayvanna.

Nasrin Naimy

Nasrin has a master's degree in Democracy Building from the University of Bergen with a specialization in women's rights in Afghanistan, as well as studies in politics and law from Oxford Brookes University and the University of Oslo.

Nasrin has over 10 years’ experience from the voluntary sector and works with capacity building in digitalization, diversity, and sustainability. She has led and co-founded the first Afghan student organization in Norway and worked with unaccompanied minor asylum seekers from Afghanistan and other conflict-affected areas. She is politically active and chairs the committee for fair and sustainable consumption in the Green Party.

Sandra Petersen

Sandra has a master's degree from SOAS, University of London and has more than twenty years' experience from various roles in Norwegian civil society organizations, as well as various voluntary positions nationally and internationally. She has worked at NAC in the periods 2003-2004 and as Executive Director in 2008-2009. In 2006 she was a board member and in the period 2009-2011 she led the women's committee.

From 2009, she has been Executive Director at the Norwegian Human Rights Foundation with a global mandate to provide political and financial support to human rights organizations and vulnerable human rights defenders. She has built a large international network through this role. From October 2021, she became a Special Adviser at the Norwegian Human Rights Fund and is also taking a doctorate at the Norwegian Center for Human Rights at the University of Oslo.

André Mundal

André is a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group, a former diplomat in the Norwegian Foreign Service, and an officer in the Norwegian Armed Forces. He has previously held the position as Norway's special representative for women, peace, and security and has been stationed at the Norwegian embassy in Kabul.

André has master's degrees from the University of New South Wales in International Relations and from the University of Tromsø in Peace and Conflict Transformation. He is also an election observer and has been on monitoring missions in both Latvia and Afghanistan.

Terje Skaufjord

Terje is a retired lecturer with a major in history from the University of Oslo, author, and local politician in the Red Party in Oslo. He has been part of NAC since the beginning and has held a position of trust and/or been employed in the organization for 35 years.
