Dialogue approach

Dialogue approach

The Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC) has long recognised the importance of conflict sensitivity, as working with communities is not always straightforward – there is the potential to foster social cohesion but also the risk of inadvertently exacerbating conflict. NAC’s approach to dialogue empowers communities to prevent and resolve conflicts through facilitated conversations and the promotion of mutual understanding.

"The Norwegian Afghanistan Committee’s dialogue approach creates safe spaces for addressing disagreements and builds bridges between people through open conversation, shared understanding, and inclusive participation."

NAC’s dialogue approach, developed in collaboration with the Nansen Centre for Peace and Dialogue, creates safe spaces for community members to engage in open discussions. This approach helps participants listen to each other’s perspectives, identify the root causes of conflict, and find common ground. The method is particularly effective in addressing social-, resource-, and gender-related conflicts.

As part of NAC’s work in Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), dialogue plays a key role in resolving disputes over communal resources like water, land, and forests. It helps stakeholders in NRM and DRR committees work together more effectively, ensuring better management of resources and more coordinated responses to natural disasters.

NAC’s dialogue approach also extends to families, where it promotes better communication and conflict resolution. By working with individuals, especially women and youth, NAC helps improve relationships within and between households and communities, laying the foundation for building stronger, more collaborative environments.
