Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction

Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction

In Afghanistan, the impacts of climate change, such as frequent droughts, floods, and landslides, have significantly affected rural communities. These environmental challenges exacerbate food insecurity, damage infrastructure, and disrupt livelihoods, and they cost the lives of people and livestock. The Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC) is committed to enhancing community resilience through comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies that address both immediate risks and long-term environmental changes.

"Through climate-conscious farming, locally anchored disaster preparedness, and sustainable management of natural resources, the Norwegian Afghanistan Committee helps communities in Afghanistan protect themselves against floods, droughts, and landslides. In this way, we strengthen both food security and resilience in the face of climate change."

NAC’s DRR programs focus on equipping communities with the tools, skills, and knowledge needed to prepare for and respond to natural hazards. By planting trees and shrubs to stabilise and protect riverbanks and hillsides, and building essential infrastructure – such as protection-, gabion-, and boundary walls – NAC helps safeguard communities from the devastating impacts of floods, soil erosion, and landslides. These efforts improve safety and contribute to the protection of rural infrastructure and livelihoods, allowing communities to better withstand environmental shocks.

A key component of NAC’s DRR efforts is promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable Natural Resource Management (NRM). By training communities in these practices, NAC ensures that farmers can adapt to changing climatic conditions, conserve natural resources, and protect their agricultural land. These practices not only enhance food security but also contribute to the overall resilience of communities in the face of climate change.

NAC also works on strengthening local institutions and disaster management systems at national, and subnational levels. By supporting disaster management committees at community, district, and provincial levels, NAC ensures that disaster preparedness and response efforts are coordinated and effective. This network of trained individuals and committees plays a vital role in helping communities to better understand the causes of climate change, learn what can be done to reduce emissions, respond effectively to emergencies, and reduce vulnerability to future disasters.
