Integrated Rural Development
The Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC) utilises an Integrated Rural Development approach to address the diverse and interconnected challenges faced by Afghanistan’s rural communities. By focusing holistically on multiple aspects of rural life – such as natural resource management – including climate-smart agriculture, education, healthcare, disaster risk reduction and economic empowerment – NAC aims to create long-term, sustainable improvements in these areas.
"The Norwegian Afghanistan Committee’s integrated development approach strengthens rural communities through holistic solutions that create lasting change, increase resilience, and provide pathways out of poverty."
NAC’s Integrated Rural Development strategy is designed to foster self-sufficiency and resilience, emphasising community-driven solutions. Projects often combine vocational training, agriculture support, and infrastructure development with efforts to improve food security and access to essential services. In doing so, NAC ensures that communities can build the necessary capacity to support themselves and tackle local challenges sustainably.
Key to the success of this approach is the participation of local communities at every stage of a project. From identifying needs to project implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, local stakeholders play an active role in shaping solutions that are tailored to their specific contexts. This ensures that the benefits of development efforts are long-lasting and well-integrated into the daily life of communities.
By addressing multiple dimensions of rural life simultaneously, NAC’s Integrated Rural Development approach promotes holistic, sustainable change, enhancing the resilience of Afghan communities and empowering them to overcome poverty and insecurity.
