The Taliban\u00a0have announced that\u00a0primary schools across\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0will\u00a0reopen<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013\u00a0Although\u00a0much\u00a0is\u00a0still\u00a0unclear, it is a good sign that the Taliban care about public services, said Hashim, a\u00a0project\u00a0manager\u00a0with the Norwegian\u00a0Afghanistan Committee\u00a0(NAC).\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hashim\u00a0is\u00a0based\u00a0in Kabul\u00a0and\u00a0is\u00a0responsible for a UNICEF-supported\u00a0education\u00a0project\u00a0in\u00a0Badakhshan\u00a0Province.\u00a0He believes that what\u00a0the new school day will\u00a0really\u00a0be like for students\u00a0will not\u00a0be\u00a0known\u00a0until the Taliban\u00a0have\u00a0officially\u00a0formed\u00a0a government.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the Taliban took over Kabul on August 15, Afghanistan has\u00a0been\u00a0essentially\u00a0shut down.\u00a0Public services\u00a0such as\u00a0banks and schools have\u00a0been\u00a0closed, leading to concern among the population.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last\u00a0week, the Taliban announced that primary schools would reopen. Hashim has worked for\u00a0NAC\u00a0for\u00a0several years and\u00a0is currently\u00a0leading\u00a0a project in collaboration with UNICEF to get children who have dropped out of school\u00a0due to COVID-19\u00a0back\u00a0into\u00a0school\u00a0and\u00a0ensure\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0catch up\u00a0with\u00a0their\u00a0lost learning.\u00a0We\u00a0had\u00a0a\u00a0chat with him\u00a0from the Oslo office\u00a0to hear\u00a0his\u00a0views\u00a0on\u00a0what\u00a0has\u00a0happened.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you tell\u00a0us\u00a0more about the Taliban announcement?<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\n<\/span>\u2013\u00a0A week ago, the Taliban announced that all students from 1st to 6th grade\u00a0were going\u00a0go back to school.\u00a0But since teachers were not sure if they would be paid their salaries, many schools remained closed.\u00a0On\u00a0Wednesday,\u00a0however, a Taliban spokesman announced that\u00a0they would pay\u00a0teachers’ salaries,\u00a0so\u00a0the schools reopened.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did people react to this?<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\n<\/span>\u2013\u00a0Even though the Taliban have appointed an acting health minister, they have not yet formed a government. Many in the provinces are\u00a0concerned and\u00a0believe they cannot trust the Taliban.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hashim adds that while he is no expert, he believes that 70 to 80% of families are sending their children to school now.\u00a0For now,\u00a0both boys and girls can go,\u00a0because\u00a0the\u00a0Taliban\u00a0have\u00a0chosen to\u00a0use the previous government\u2019s\u00a0school system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u00a0Most primary schools are pure girls’\u00a0or\u00a0boys’ schools, but in some\u00a0schools,\u00a0there are both boys and girls.\u00a0In these schools\u00a0the boys sit on one side\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0classroom and\u00a0the girls on\u00a0the other. This\u00a0will surely change once the Taliban have formed a government, but for now they will be allowed to continue like this.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does this mean that women are allowed to teach?<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\n<\/span>\u2013\u00a0Yes, in\u00a0girls\u2019\u00a0schools, women are allowed to teach. In schools where there are both boys and girls, it is more problematic, but as I said, they are allowed until further notice.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>Hashim\u00a0mentions multiple\u00a0times how important he thinks it is that the girls are allowed to go to school, expressing their fears about what the future will bring. Nevertheless, he believes it is a good sign that the Taliban have now chosen to\u00a0reopen<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>schools.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reopening of schools is a sign that the Taliban are thinking about Afghanistan’s population. Since August 15,\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0hasn’t had a head of state,\u00a0but\u00a0in one or two days\u00a0there will likely be\u00a0a new government.\u00a0The Taliban\u00a0have\u00a0shown\u00a0that they are committed to having a functioning health system and public\u00a0services,\u00a0unlike\u00a0the last\u00a0time\u00a0they\u00a0ruled\u00a0from\u00a01996\u00a0to\u00a02001.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What challenges will students and teachers face now?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\n<\/span>\u2013\u00a0We don’t know if teachers are\u00a0now\u00a0receiving their salaries. Even\u00a0if they get\u00a0them, inflation is so high that they\u00a0will struggle to survive on their wages. I am afraid that many teachers will give up their jobs\u00a0because of\u00a0their\u00a0weakened purchasing power. When it comes to students, one of the challenges is that we do\u00a0not\u00a0yet\u00a0know what will happen to\u00a0students from\u00a0the 7<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0grade,\u00a0and whether\u00a0both\u00a0boys\u00a0and\u00a0girls\u00a0are allowed\u00a0to participate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does the\u00a0Norwegian\u00a0Afghanistan Committee respond to what has happened, and what do you do\u00a0about\u00a0the situation?<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\n<\/span>\u2013\u00a0It is still\u00a0too\u00a0early to say what will happen and what the Taliban will announce. But right\u00a0now,\u00a0it is important that we continue our work.\u00a0\u00a0If\u00a0girls and boys are allowed to go to primary school, we will continue\u00a0to support them.\u00a0However, it\u00a0<\/span>will be\u00a0<\/span>difficult\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>support\u00a0<\/span>higher<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>grades\u00a0<\/span>if\u00a0<\/span>these\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>reserved\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>boys.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Therefore, we hope\u00a0that the<\/span>\u00a0Taliban\u00a0will\u00a0express their commitment to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>importance\u00a0<\/span>of education\u00a0for boys and girls of all ages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
